Traditional Nursing Students Make Community Contributions in Public Health

Nursing is so much more than caring for people in a time of vulnerability and sickness.  Today’s nurse must be prepared to work with populations of patients.  This may be a population of seniors living in low income housing, or a population of homeless who need to know how to access the new Health Care Reform Insurance options.  This semester, CSS nursing students collaborated with the following agencies and populations to design and create projects across the spectrum: County and Tribal Public Health Departments, elementary and secondary schools, Damiano Center and low income senior housing to name a few.  They presented on topics ranging from childhood obesity, Healthcare Reform, biomonitoring of toxic agents in high risk groups, to controversies over Methadone Clinics.    Nursing at the college is active in our community, seeking ways for all of us to take the next steps for better health outcomes, one step at a time.
